Family owned and operated, Babcock Vineyards is an expanding 20,000 case winery with 70 acres planted to Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Noir, and Syrah. Experimental varieties such as Albarino, Tempranillo, and Pignolo are being evaluated. The winery also purchases grapes from local single vineyards of notable reputation. Ever curious, Bryan has experimented with nearly 20 different varietals. Visitors are welcome to taste Babcock Wines at the winery's tasting room. One of California's brightest stars in the field of winemaking is Bryan Babcock of Babcock Vineyards. Not only was Bryan selected by the Los Angeles Times as one of the "Ten Best Winemakers of the Year", this influential daily also named him "Most Courageous Winemaker of the Year" for his daring style. In 1995, the prestigious James Beard Foundation chose Bryan as one of the "Top Ten Small Production Winemakers in the World", the only American chosen for this enological dream team.
In 1983, various notable winemakers purchased Babcock fruit and made compelling wines. The following year, the Babcocks decided it was time to seize the opportunity to produce their own wine.
Bryan became academically prepared. Once he received his undergraduate degree in biology and chemistry from Occidental College, Bryan entered the Masters program in food science, specializing in enology, and the University of California at Davis. This primed him for the first harvest in 1984, which brought a double gold medal for the estate Sauvignon Blanc. Since then, Bryan's wines feature estate grown fruit as well as select local vineyards from Santa Barbara County. Uncompromised quality and a focused approach have consistently earned him recognitions over the years. Once considered a remote area for producing wine, the considerable success and world-wide acclaim of Babcock Vineyards has been instrumental in the flurry of growth in Santa Barbara County.
